NOTE: the "ADD" figure makes this a "bifocal" prescription:

  • The "SPH" figure is for your FULL DISTANCE VISION
  • The "ADD" is added to the SPH for the "reading glasses" lens.
To get SINGLE-VISION glasses of your computer scrip, you need to do the math to the SPH and leave the "ADD" blank. Adding a POSITIVE "ADD" figure to a NEGATIVE "SPH" figure, of course, is as if you're subtracting the ADD figure from the SPH, to wit:
(-4.00) + (+1.50) = (-2.50).

To measure your PD:

  1. Place the millimeter ruler on the bridge of your nose.
  2. Have a friend face you about arms length away.
  3. Have your friend measure the distance between the center of your pupils (the black dots in the middle of your eyes).
  4. (Or you can do it yourself simply by looking in the mirror).
As a guideline:

Most adults' PD's are between 55-65.
Most kids' PD's are between 42-54.

PD is given as "Distance PD" and "Near PD" such as 63/60.

• Distance PD is when you are looking straight ahead.
• Near PD is when you are looking close.

When you look close your eyes turn in, so the near PD is always less than your distance PD. Each eye can also be measured individually. This is called a monocular PD. It would be expressed as 31/30 or 31/31 depending on your symmetry and facial feature.

A good prescription should always have PD written in the first place and you've the right to ask for it, if it's not written in your prescription.

  • Power of left lens,
  • power of right lens,
  • and your PD.
The guy with the ruler records your PD - and never tells you what is. Your doctor will not write it on your prescription. Your PD never changes as an adult, no matter how bad your eyes get. When you konow your PD, You can order glasses from any lab of your choice, including mail-order labs: Knowledge is power.

• "Prescription life" is less than two years... so labs can force you to buy new eyeglasses every two years.

I finally had enough. I went to Lenscrafters and asked for my old prescription. He referred me to the doctor in the back. It's been ten years, so my prescription was not in the computer. They told me that although I had purchased eyeglasses in the past, they had read the prescription off my old pair - which they "don't do anymore."

I asked them to read it off my current glasses & write it down. They protested: They wouldn't do it, nor would they give me a prescription which I could fill anywhere. They kept pressing, asking why I needed those numbers. I made up a story that I was shopping for scuba goggles, which satisfied one lab technician enough to scratch down the numbers on a piece of scrap paper.

By this time, five people were surrounding me, all confronting me about obtaining a new prescription, getting an eye exam, questioning my motivations for coming in. I took my precious information and ran out the door, less confident in my quest for simply changing my frames.

Using Photoshop, I forged an eyeglass prescription form and inked in my own PD, as well as the prescription from my last pair of glasses. I printed it on card stock and copied the name and phone number of a local optometrist, text color in dark blue with black graphics.


You have a legal right to obtain your eyeglass prescription from your eyecare professional. Request your prescription at the time of your eye examination or request it later, it's your right.

You've the right to have your PD to be written on the prescription.
