Gold

Just because Roosevelt exempted "gold coins having a recognized special value" does not mean that any future call-in would exempt collectibles. Roosevelt's Executive Order would have no legal binding on another gold call-in. Besides, on December 31, 1974, with Executive Order 11825, President Gerald Ford repealed the Executive Order that Roosevelt used to call in gold in 1933. This was necessary because on the same day Congress restored Americans' right to own gold. Furthermore, in 1977 Congress removed the president's authority to regulate gold transactions during a period of national emergency other than war.

Even if a law did exempt certain coins from future confiscation, the government could change that law. Sadly, the government often simply ignores laws. Dealers who say they sell "non-confiscateable" gold have no basis for making such claims.

Reporting requirements do not apply to American Gold Eagles, no matter the quantities. Furthermore, reporting requirements do not apply to any fractional ounce gold coins. Sales of American Silver Eagles, privately-minted Silver Eagles, and 100-oz silver bars are not reportable, no matter the quantity.

Gold & Counterfeiting

Google search Kitco counterfeit gold...

http://www.golddealer.com/newsletter.html

We are getting emails about the possibility of counterfeit coins, so here are a few guidelines: Actually counterfeits are no problem at all to those investing in PCGS certified coins because PCGS employs the world's finest graders, which is to say it is impossible to fool them. That being said there are still a few things to remember. First, it is rare to see a counterfeit bullion coin. This is so because there is no profit in producing them as they sell for content. Uncertified (so called raw) counterfeit pre-1933 US gold is not a problem within the US. Most competent dealers can readily spot a fake. But beware if you're traveling outside the US. Many countries have laws against counterfeiting their own coinage but not against counterfeiting US coinage.

Counterfeit US gold is usually seen in the Middle East and while some are good examples most lack the characteristic detail seen in real US gold coins. Closer inspection will reveal careless die polishing marks which transfer to the coin itself as small raised lines often called tooling marks. The most often seen uncertified US gold coins which present a problem are the $3 and $1 gold pieces. This is so because they offer the faker the most profit for the gold he uses in this deception. In the old days dealers had to memorize characteristics which were common to all authentic coins to avoid mistakes. An example is the always popular $20 Saint Gaudens High Relief. All authentic examples have small, raised, concentric circles in the upper right hand quadrant of the observe. Today, most expensive coins are certified so the graders check these details carefully. As far as bullion coins are concerned, the advent of the modern bullion coin (US Eagle, Candadian Maple Leaf, South African Krugerrand) and bar has virtually eliminated modern counterfeiting although I did read of a recent Ebay problem. To insure your investment, deal with competent dealers with credentials. These professionals, along with PCGS are your best protection tools.

• As far as counterfeit coins, if you can find any of the old Fisch Instruments fulcrum counterfeit detector balances, these are very accurate for identifying underweight fakes.

Fake Gold Rings: Made From What...?

Google: "fake gold" rings "made from" "copper and"

A fake gold ring is likely made of mostly copper (along with, possibly, stainless steel to adjust color - information is sparse on this - rj).

When you perspire, the metals in the ring react with the acid in your sweat to form salts, which are green. These acids are essentially causing the copper to corrode on the surface of the metal, which forms a salt compound of the metal. These salts are absorbed into the skin and the result is a decidedly green digit. This is nothing to be worried about; it's not a metal allergy you're suffering from.

Sunlight Benefits
[http://www.drnorthrup.com/2002-mar_ewwupdate.php ]

In summary, try to get some daily sun exposure without sunscreen, exposing as much of your body as possible in the early morning or late afternoon. Start with 3 minutes of exposure and increase this by 30 seconds daily until you've reached a max of about 10-15 minutes. You can get sun exposure by standing by an open window with no glass blocking the uv light. Alternatives would be driving your car with the windows open or the sun roof open, or taking a walk with face, arms, and legs exposed. And take antioxidant supplements both internally and externally to minimize and repair free radical skin damage.

To sunbathe safely remember that frequent, short exposures are not only safer but more beneficial than a prolonged dose of sunlight. Also, early morning sunshine has been identified as the most beneficial. Just 20 minutes of safe sunbathing a day is enough. The safest way to benefit from the healing powers of sunlight, say experts, is to build your exposure slowly throughout the year and to avoid burning by staying in the shade when the sun is at its most intense or you are on your holiday.

For centuries, doctors and natural healers relied on something called Heliotherapy - using sunlight for healing - to mend wounds, treat bone diseases such as rickets or lung infections like tuberculosis (TB) and to simply help their patients rebuild strength after an illness - but all the known benefits of sunbathing were ignored when researchers began to link the alarming rise in the number of cases of skin cancer over the last 20 years with over-exposure to the sun.

The damage caused by staying too long in intense sunlight does increase the risk of skin cancer, but safe sunbathing alleviates a host of problems ranging from chronic skin conditions including acne, eczema, and psoriasis. It can help build strong bones and teeth, lower cholesterol levels, prevent heart disease, and ward off depression. Even better, according to some health experts, sunshine may even prevent more cancers than it causes.

Stronger Bones & Teeth:
Everyone knows you need calcium for strong bones and teeth, but for calcium can do its job, you need a good supply of vitamin D - which protects against bone loss. Vitamin D is not really a vitamin at all but a hormone-like substance that the body can only make when it gets enough sunlight. Since 90% of westerners now spend 90% of their waking time indoors, the majority of people do not get enough exposure to sunlight to make enough vitamin D. The UK's department of health says we need 400 IUs (international units) of vitamin D a day to stop the body from leaching calcium from the bones. The trouble is, the typical British diet only provides, on average, 100 IUs per day. Also, the body is better able to use the vitamin D it makes itself than that which it gets from the diet. What all this means is that a growing number of people who are at risk of being deficient in vitamin D and thus also at risk of brittle bone disease.

Osteoporosis - there are often no symptoms until the first fracture, by which time you may have lost a third of your bone density. There may be no symptoms until a bone has fractured and by the time you are at serious risk of osteoporosis, you may have already lost a third of your starting bone mass. In studies of elderly populations who have suffered a broken hip, up to 40% have been shown to be lacking in vitamin D. There are also more hip fractures in winter when bone density is at its lowest.

Enhanced Immunity:

Sunlight triggers the body to make its own vitamin D, which is crucial not only for strong bones and healthy teeth ,but for keeping the immune system healthy too. Studies have shown, for example, that exposing the body to sunlight or even ultraviolet light from an artificial source increases the number of white blood cells or lymphocytes. These are the body's primary defence against the onslaught of an infection and are an important part of your immune response to the organisms that cause illness.

Better Mood, Better Sleep, Better Sex Drive
Sunlight also triggers the increased production of the feel-good brain chemical, serotonin - which, as well as controlling your sleep patterns, body temperature, and sex drive, lifts your mood and helps ward off depression.

Not many people realise that the skin cancers or malignant melanomas that can kill develop most often on those body parts that are not usually exposed to sunlight – i.e. the back of the legs and the torso. Also, skin cancer rates are higher in less sunny parts of Europe than those closer to the equator. Again, nobody can explain why this should be so but one theory is that sunlight works to stimulate the body's own defences against all cancers.

Prostate Enlargement & Prolonged Sexual Delay
[http://www.naturalways.com/prostacare.htm ]
A sedentary lifestyle and a diet rich in red meat, coffee and alcohol are known to precipitate BPH. Prolonged sexual activity without climax and nutritional deficiencies in zinc, essential fatty acids, fruit and vegetables may also contribute.

[Prostate]
EPS = expressed prostatic secretions.
"How EPS Testing Works: The telomerase test uses expressed prostatic secretions (EPS) collected after a prostatic massage. The EPS is then tested for the presence of telomerase. Telomeres are structures found on the end of human chromosomes. Chromosomes are those structures inside our cells, which contain genetic information. Telomeres are necessary for cells to divide normally..."

In writing to patients, your webmaster has commented that blood in semen might be viewed about the same way one would view blood in nasal mucus when one had a bad cold or sinus infection. It certainly is a sign of problems, but it's not thing to go into a panic about. Good medical care is called for in any case. Blood in semen is also seen after the beginning of a series of prostate drainages. The pressure of the drainages, and the "popping" of clogged acini, can result in some temporary bleeding as tiny blood vessels are ruptured. Again this is worth noting, but not cause for undue alarm. Bring it up to your doctor, but don't be surprised if he or she says not to worry about it.
--------
Q: My doctor gave me a vigorous prostate massage where I released a tablespoon of EPS (Expressed Prostatic Secreations). However, I noticed I have been seeing blood in my ejaculate. Is this normal?

A: Yes, a small blood vessel was possibly injured. I would not worry about it unless the blood does not clear up in a few days. I have seen bloody EPS and semen in many of my patients and should resolve after successful eradication of the infection. Cancer which is rare should be ruled out and your doctor is aware of these. By the way, have you felt an almost relief of pressure or pain or freer urination after the drainage of a tablespoonful of EPS?

Yes, a small blood vessel was possibly injured. I would not worry about it unless the blood does not clear up in a few days.

From:(first doctor) Worsening of symptoms after a bloody massage suggest a mild form of acute prostatitis and/or exacerbation of semen infection.

Diabetes, Dieting
[Seeing Spots" & Low Sugar] Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) may occur in persons with diabetes, or in persons on a severe diet. Just before fainting, a person may: Feel a sense of dread; Feel dizzy; See spots before their eyes.

Chronic dieting has a terrible impact on your energy and self-image, and therefore on your sex drive. Low-fat diets are a special problem, because your body needs lipids to make its hormones, including the testosterone needed for sexual response.

Stress is an enormous factor. The body naturally puts survival ahead of pleasure. Your over-burdened adrenal glands can rob your body of the building blocks it uses to make testosterone and estrogen, which are vital to desire and sexual response.

How might you reduce the stress at its source? Can you cope with another way, or shield yourself from it? Can you compensate for it by nurturing yourself? Changes in your routines, a new form of creative self-expression, help from your partner, working on unresolved problems, or time you devote to yourself are areas to work on.

[Constant Sensation of Phlegm in Throat: ]

Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (COPD) refers to a number of lung disorders that are present over a long period of time and cause some blocking or obstruction of the airways. The most common form of COPD is a combination of chronic bronchitis and emphysema. The most frequent warning signs of COPD are listed below. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, discuss them with your doctor as soon as possible
Chronic Phlegm Production - The lungs produce excess phlegm or sputum as a defense response to infection or irritants. Excess phlegm or mucus production lasting a month or longer could indicate an underlying problem.

MH, Emotional Well-Being

[(FOLKLURE) http://www.unani.com/emotions.htm ]

According to Unani, conditions of the mind, mental "diseases" in particular, are not the cause of physical ailments, but rather the result of disturbance of balance in the humors. A person muddled in his mental processes, for example, might appear to have an intellectual deficiency or some other "psychological" ailment. However, imbalance of the phlegm humor would account for the sluggishness of mental faculties and would be treated by resolving the excess phlegm humor so as to restore fluidity of mental processes. Such imbalances can be caused by thoughts, sounds, foods, and other factors, and they can be corrected with the same, or their opposites. Anyone who truly seeks the truth about health and wellness will not ignore these points.

[ (FOLKLURE)http://www.geocities.com/a_and_e_uk/Melancholy.htm ]

...Having considered the supernatural implications of melancholy in general, I now wish to examine a special case: that of acedia or 'religious melancholy'. Acedia (from the Greek for non-caring [49]) is generally considered by historians to be the ecclesiastical counterpart of melancholy. It was described by many ecclesiastical writers as being one of the seven principal vices (the others being pride, avarice, lust, envy, gluttony and wrath). The classical definition of acedia – 'tedium or solicitude of heart' [50] - was provided by John Cassian, a 5th-century monk. In the 6th century St Gregory the Great combined acedia with tristitia (sorrow), thus creating the classic 'monks' disease'. Most Christian writers associated acedia with an excess of black bile (linking it to melancholy); however some viewed it as a consequence of excess phlegm. In his Opera of 1517 Nicholas Cusanus claimed that: 'acedia may occur through phlegmatic sloth in all good works, in the daily toil for existence, and in defence of the fatherland. Then the body becomes paralysed, feverish, swollen up or bled dry.' [51]

Shell Shock

In 1944, the physiologist Geoffrey Harris proposed that the brain was also a hormonal gland, that it released hormones that traveled to the pituitary and directed the pituitary's actions. ... lots of scientists thought Harris's idea was bonkers. [By the 1970s, he was finally proven right by Guillemin and Schally.]

In World War II, American fighting forces lost 504,000 men from the fighting effort because of psychiatric collapse. ... In every one of America's wars in this century the rates of psychiatric collapse among soldiers have exceeded the number killed in action. ... Psychiatric casualties constituted the single largest category of disability discharges in World War II.

One soldier, describing his first panic attack in 1944 almost forty years later, could still recall the time of day and location of the attack, what he was doing at that moment, and who he was with. Five months before, he had participated in one of the first troop waves to land on the Normandy beaches on D-Day. He said the anxiety he felt landing on the beaches was mild compared to the sheer terror of one of his panic attacks.

Psychiatric breakdown in war has been dismissed as isolated acts of cowardice, held by the US military up through World War II. ... World War II saw the first large-scale systematic use of recruit screening for psychiatric disposition to mental collapse. The results of this screening: despite the attempt to eliminate the "weak" from the military manpower pool, psychiatric casualties were admitted to military hospitals at twice the World War I rate... Psychiatric breakdown has nothing to do with being "weak" or cowardly. ... The rates at which soldiers become debilitated suggest quite strongly that psychiatric breakdown is precisely what normal men do when the strain becomes too great.

In 1944 an experiment was tried at Anzio for shell shock. Captain Joseph Campbell used a program of rest, physical work, and therapy. Campbell returned 66 percent of his psychiatric cases to duty.

In 1946 for the first time it was recognized that anyone could break down under gunfire and that psychiatric casualties could be predicted in direct proportion to the severity of combat exposure. It was concluded that 200-240 days in combat would suffice to break even the strongest soldier: "There is no such thing as 'getting used to combat.' ... Each moment of combat imposes a strain so great that men will break down in direct relation to the intensity and duration of their exposure. Thus psychiatric casualties are as inevitable as gunshot and shrapnel wounds in warfare."

Skin Lotions - Jojoba Oil
[http://www.organicformulations.com/natural_vs_cosmetic.asp ]

For an example a well excepted oil (wax) that has been rediscovered that is safe and non-toxic is Jojoba oil. Environmentalist welcomed jojoba in the 1970s as a substitute for sperm whale oil. The oil is an excellent emollient in skin creams ...

The major effects of Aloe Vera extract in preparations for the skin and hair are known to increase healing and have anti-inflammatory properties as well. Testimonial to the efficiency of Aloe Vera is its use in skin treatments products by large cosmetic houses and has been documented as early as 1552BC.

Jojoba oil's collagen-like properties improve skin health. Applied directly to the skin, Jojoba Oilreduces fine lines and wrinkles, soothes sunburns and treats psoriasis and acne...[From a place that sells Jojoba...}

What is the composition of Jojoba oil? An unique aspect of Jojoba oil is that its composition is closer to a wax than to an oil. It hardly contains any triglycerides unlike other vegetable oil. Due to its specific composition, jojoba oil resists oxidation, even under harsh conditions. It has an outstanding emollient effect ["softening" or "to make supple."]

leg emollient of choice is jojoba oil, because it soaks into the skin easily and doesn't feel greasy. She also prefers fish oil to borage oil because fish oil has omega-3, -6 and -9 acids.

[Skin Lotions - Avoid These Ingredients]

Glossary Of Chemicals & Synthetic To Avoid In Personal Care Products

[http://www.ferlowbrothers.com/bad.htm] These are only 44 of the over 800 toxic ingredients in personal care products:

1. AHA (alpha hydroxy acid):
Skin is exfoliated chemically instead of mechanically via abrasion, dries and increases skin aging. Supposed to be anti-wrinkle, found in many skin and hair care products. Used as a solvent originally in cleaning compounds and for tanning leather. A smooth finish is developed by stripping the outer layer of the epidermis, which causes the irritated skin to puff up and thus fill in the lines and wrinkles. The FDA warns that strengths over 3% may thin the skin.

2. Acetamide MEA:
Used in lipsticks and cream blusher to retain moisture. Causes adverse reactions, and is toxic, carcinogenic, and mutagenic.

3. Alkyl-phenol-ethoxylades:
Has been found to reduce male sperm count, and to mimic estrogen in the body. It is widely used in shampoo, causes adverse reactions and has been shown to be toxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic.

4. Ammonium laureth sulphate:
This substance contains ether and is also easily absorbed by the skin. It is found in hair and bubble bath products. It is known to cause adverse reactions, to be carcinogenic, mutagenic and toxic.

5. Aluminum:
Used as a colour additive in cosmetics, especially eyeshadow. Another form of Aluminum is used in deodorants and anti-persperants. Listed as carcinogenic, toxic and mutagenic.

6. Alcohol:
Acts as carrying and antifoaming agent as well as a water and oil solvent. It dries quickly, and if synthetically produced is carcinogenic, mutagenic, toxic, adverse reactions.

7. Bentonite:
Used in facial mask, makeup, face powder. Supposed to draw out toxins and claimed to be non-toxic, but rats have died when injected with it.

8. Benzene:
It is a known bone-marrow poison, yet is widely used in combined with other chemicals in many personal care products. Causes adverse reactions, is carcinogenic, mutagenic and toxic.

9. Coal Tar:
Many kinds of shampoo designed to treat dandruff & flaky scalp contain it. Disguised with names FD, FDC or FD&C colour. Coal tar causes potentially severe allergic reactions, asthma attacks, fatigue, nervousness, headaches, nausea, lack of concentration, and cancer.

10. Cocamide DEA:
Nitrosamines can form in all cosmetic ingredients containing amines and amino derivatives with nitrogen compounds. When DEA is applied to skin known carinogens can form.

11. Cocomide DEA:

May contain dangerous levles of ethylene oxide and/or dixane, both potent toxins. A manufacturing byproduct. Also used as chelating agent. Carcinogenic.

BOTTOM
TOP

17. Hydantoin DMDM:
Used in the synthesis of lubricants and resins, and is derived from methanol. Causes dermatitis. Acts as a preservative and may release formaldehyde and is a suspected carcinogen. Rats develop cancer when injected with this chemical.

18. Elastin:
Supposed to improve the elasticity of the skin when applied externally, however, there is no proof. It is a protein in connective tissue.

19. FDC-n (FD&C):
These are available in various different colours. Some are simply irritants while others are strong carcinogens. Most are coal tar derived, and many scientists feel that adequate safety levels have not been established for each colour category.

20. Fluoride:
Hazardous chemical. Researchers linked it to cancer years ago. No one is listening. Fluoridated toothpaste is especially dangerous to young children who tend to swallow it after brushing their teeth. Supposed to stop tooth decay. Scientists are now linking flouride to dental deformity, arthritis, allergic reactions, can lead to Crohn's disease. A toxic manufacturing by-product.

21. Formaldehyde:
It is a colourless gas with vapours that are extremely irritating to mucous membranes. Used in nail polish and hardeners, soap, cosmetics and hair growing products. Due to it's bad name it is sometimes hidden under the name DMDM hydantoin or MDM hydantion. Its trade-name is Formalin. Released by diazolidinyl urea. Causes dermatitis, and ingestion can cause severe abdominal pain, internal bleeding, vertigo, coma, and a loss of ability to urinate. It is very toxic when inhaled, a severe skin irritant, and a suspected carcinogen that is linked to cancer. Its use in cosmetics is banned in Japan and Sweden.

22. Glycols (group)
Used as a humectant (emulsifier/moisturizer), that can be from animal or vegetable, natural or synthetic. In most cases it is used as a cheap glycerine substitute. Propylene glycol did cause liver abnormalities and kidney damage in laboratory animals. Diethylene glycol and carbitol are considered toxic. Ethylene glycol is a suspected bladder carcinogen. The FDA cautions manufacturers that glycols may cause adverse ractions in users. They have been shown to be carcinogenic, mutagenic, and toxic.

23. Imidazolidinyl Urea:
After parabens, this is the second most commonly used preservative in cosmetics. It is colourless, tasteless and odourless. Used in powders, baby shampoo, bath oils, colognes, eye shadows, blushes, hair tonics, lotions. Causes dermatitis. If heated to higher temperatures it produces formaldehyde.

24. Lauramide DEA:
Lauric Acid derived mostly from coconut oil and laurel oil, and used as a base for soaps, detergents, and laurel alcohol because of their foaming properties. Nitrosamines can form in all cosmetic ingredients containing amines and amino derivatives with nitrogen compounds and nitrosamines are known carcinogens.

25. Methyl Chloroisothiazolinine:
Carcinogenic, mutagenic, toxic and causes adverse reactions.

33. Propylene Glycol:
It is the most common moisture carrying vehicle other than water that is used. Found in most shampoo and conditioners, even foodstuffs such as cakes & muffins. Derived from petroleum products. Also used in anti-freeze, de-icer, latex, paint, and laundry detergent. It can cause irritation of nasal and respiratory passages and if ingested, can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. It is documented to cause liver abnormalities and kidney damage. Research also shows it is mutagenic, and a contributor to cardiac arrest. Japanese studies show it damages cell DNA (genetic code). Strongly degreases and dries the skin.

Quaternium-15
a formaldehyde-releasing preservative. It is used in many cosmetics and pharmaceutical preparations (shampoos, soaps, moisturizers, shaving products, sunscreens, cleansers). Is found in car wash soap, engine degreaser, toothpaste, cream, lotion, and garage floor cleaners. Penetrates your eyes, brain, liver and remains there for long-term. Degenerates cell membranes and can change the genetic information (mutagenic) in cells and damage the immune system. May cause blindness and lead to cataracts. Eyes can not heal properly. Retards the eye healing process. Studies also show that these additives react with the ingredients of food supplements or cosmetics, to form carcinogenic nitrates and dioxin. All of this may enter the circulatory system with each shampooing or each oral ingestion. The end result being that these harmful ingredients can be retained in the liver, heart, eyes, kidneys and muscles for several years after being used. It is further reported to cause eye irritations, skin rashes, hair loss, dandruff and allergic reactions.

It is derived in powder form from the mineral magnesium silicate. It can be hazardous to one's health, and is toxic with prolonged inhalation. Some talc found to contain amphibole particle distribution typical to asbestos, which is cancer causing and a known lung irritant.

43. Toluene:
Obtained from petroleum, it is used as a solvent in cosmetics, especially nail polish and dyes. It resembles benzene, and if ingested may caue mild anemia, liver damage, irritate the skin and respiratory tract. Also in pharmaceuticals and gasoline as a blending agent.

44. Triethanolamine (TEA):
Can cause severe facial dermatitis, irritation and sensitivity. Used as ph adjuster. Reacts with stearic acid to form oil in water emulsions, typically lotions. May contain nitrosamines, known carcinogens. Its main toxic effect in animals is due to its over-alkalinity. It is used as a coating agent for fruits and vegetables.

Swimming Pool Health Hazards

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more Americans _ perhaps a thousand or more each year _ are getting sick from public swimming pools. That's not so many when you consider the millions of people who go swimming. However, reported pool-related outbreaks _ mainly bouts of diarrhea _ rose from two in 1986 to 21 in 2000, the most recent CDC statistics available. While the agency does not keep track of how many people were affected in those cases, it does know that most of the 16,800 confirmed illnesses in the 1990s linked to outbreaks in recreational waters occurred in swimming pools and spas.

Vitamin E

http://www.wholehealthmd.com/refshelf/substances_view/1,1525,906,00.html

Vitamin E is actually an umbrella term for a group of compounds called tocopherols and tocotrienols. Until recently, most vitamin E products contained only tocopherols (alpha-, beta-, delta-, and gamma-tocopherols). You need both tocopherols and tocotrienols for full benefits. Vitamin E appears to play a role in protecting the body from disorders. It may slow the aging process. Tocotrienols (alpha-tocotrienol, specifically) appear to be the most powerful of the vitamin E antioxidants. Circulatory disorders, skin and joint problems, diabetes-related nerve complications, high cholesterol, endometriosis, immune-system function, and memory are also believed to benefit from vitamin E. But nothing definitive has been proven.

The healing powers of regular vitamin E supplements - containing tocopherols only - are often merged with those of vitamin C, which increases the effectiveness of vitamin E, possibly easing complications of congestive heart failure, alcoholism, cancer, HIV infection, lupus, multiple sclerosis and nail problems. But results are vague.

Vitamin E is claimed to help prevent prostate and colon cancers. A Finnish study and several others seemed to support this, but to confuse matters, a survey of patients with those forms of cancer showed that they had also taken the same amount of Vitamin E as those without cancer.

Facts About Vitamin E ... ...and the role that vitamin E has within the body.

Vitamin E is a fat soluble vitamin made up of seven compounds called tocopherols, with alpha being the most active.

Vitamin E is an antioxidant and can be enhanced by other antioxidants such as Vitamin C and Selenium.

This vitamin can be obtained within its natural form, or it can be synthesised (in other words a synthetic form of vitamin E), but the natural form of vitamin E is far more readily available for absorption by the body.

Vitamin E is destroyed by cooking.

Absorption of vitamin E takes place in the intestines with the help of bile salts.

High concentrations of vitamin E can be found within the liver, fat storing tissues and muscles such as the heart. Also this vitamin can be found in the adrenal, pituitary and sex glands.

Some of the most significant food sources of vitamin E are found in avocado, egg yolk, sesame seeds, tahini, wheatgerm and whole grains.

Vitamin E requires many important co-nutrients, such as Vitamin C, Vitamin B complex, Selenium, Inositol, manganese, zinc and Vitamin A.

Vitamin E also promotes normal blood clotting, preventing Vitamin A and saturated fats from breaking down into harmful substances in the body, the release of insulin from the pancreas, maintaining cardiovascular health, the increase in levels of "good" cholesterol and regeneration of the skin.

Your vitamin E requirements should be increased if you have stress, diabetes, drink chlorinated water, smoke, are going through menopause or subjected to high levels of pollutants.

By combating the free radicals that attack polyunsaturated fats in the body, Vitamin E protects cellular membranes from oxidative damage. Vitamin C and selenium enhance Vitamin E.

Selenium

http://www.wholehealthmd.com/refshelf/substances_view/1,1525,10055,00.html
The most concentrated food source for selenium is the Brazil nut; a single one contains 120 mcg, (which is about twice the RDA [400 mcg is rec. for AntiOx Protection]). Seafood in general, as well as poultry and meat, are also good sources. So are grains, especially oats and brown rice.

Selenium helps to boost the immune system, providing an increase in the body's defense against dangerous bacteria, viruses, and cancer cells. Every cell in the body needs a particular hormone from the thyroid gland that selenium helps to convert to an active form. It helps mop up dangerous free radicals that can damage and alter healthy cells.

Prevents cancer: Test-tube studies indicate that in addition to fostering healthy cell growth and division, selenium discourages the formation of tumors. Earlier studies had found that in people already diagnosed with cancer, those whose selenium levels were lowest developed more subsequent tumors than those whose selenium levels were highest. Individuals with low selenium levels also had a greater likelihood of cancer recurrence, were at higher risk of having the cancer spread to new organs, and generally survived shorter periods of time.

The RDA for selenium is 55 mcg for women and 70 mcg for men. Most adults readily obtain this amount through their regular diet, and it's rare that people living in an industrialized country become deficient in this important trace mineral.

General Dosage Information: For preventing the effects of aging and protecting against cancer: Take 400 mcg a day. For guarding against cataracts and macular degeneration: Take 200 to 400 mcg a day.

Brazil Nuts & Selenium

[Vitamin E, C, Selenium]

http://www.annecollins.com/diet_foods/brazil-nuts.htm

Brazil nuts have about 2,500 times as much selenium as any other nut. Nutritionists say three brazil nuts a day is all you need to get a healthy dose of selenium, magnesium, and thiamin.

Brazil nuts' high selenium content also fights the aging process and stimulates the immune system. Patients with early Alzheimers disease, antioxidants - including selenium - boosted mood and mental performance. Like all nuts, brazil nuts are an excellent source of protein and fiber. Brazil nuts are high in minerals including zinc and magnesium, and contain useful amounts of phosphorous, copper and iron. Like all nuts, Brazil Nuts are high in calories and fat. Calories in Brazil Nuts - 1 oz/25g = 186 calories.

[Cranberry Tablets]

To prevent Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs), drink lots of cranberry juice and/or take cranberry tablets.

Drink one 8 ounce glass of pure cranberry juice (not cocktail) to prevent UTIs. The tannins in the cranberries prevent bacteria in the urine from sticking to the bladder wall and causing an infection. Blueberries also contain tannins. Straight cranberry juice without added sugar is tough to find

Drinking ten ounces of cranberry juice per day has been shown to reduce the risk of getting a bladder infection.
I have read, from several sources, the "medicinal" amount of cranberry juice (to prevent bladder infections) is 3 oz. per day. I add just 3 oz. per day to water; it seems to have helped.

Milk Thistle

A typical dose of milk thistle is 200 mg two to three times per day of a standardized extract containing 70% silymarin. There is some evidence that silymarin bound to phosphatidylcholine may be better absorbed. In this form, it should be taken at 100 mg to 200 mg twice a day.

The primary use for milk thistle is to protect the liver from toxins. The active constituents of milk thistle are known collectively as silymarin. Silymarin is believed to function by protecting liver cells from toxins by binding to liver cells, acting as an antioxidant and scavenger of free radicals, and stabilizing liver cell membranes.

Used for liver congestion – this is a condition known in the natural medicine world, characterized by aching under the ribs, low energy, constipation, premenstrual syndrome, allergies, chemical sensitivity, unhealthy skin, and general malaise.

There are no standard recommendations as to the best time of day to take the herb or whether to take it with food as opposed to on an empty stomach.

Chemical Burns ( as in INSECTICIDE BURNS)

Chemical burns have characteristics that are different from thermal burns. The extent and depth of injury in a chemical burn often is not apparent immediately; severity is frequently underestimated. Circulating fluid loss can occur as with thermal burns. In addition, absorption of a corrosive chemical may cause acute or delayed systemic toxicity.

Patients with exposure to a highly corrosive, penetrating, oily or persistent chemical may require additional decontamination to prevent further injury and systemic absorption. Common sites of residual contamination include the armpits, groin, buttocks, hair, ears, nostrils, and under the fingernails and toenails. Usually, these patients do not pose a risk of secondary contamination if they have undergone the basic decontamination, but if the material is highly contaminating (e.g., organophosphate pesticides, radioactive dust), caregivers should wear gowns and gloves to protect themselves.

Use plain liquid soap or shampoo for cleansing the skin. For a few chemicals, special solutions are recommended for skin decontamination (see specific protocols).

We dine well here in Camelot, We eat ham and jam and Spam a lot

We're Knights of the Round Table, Our shows are formidable, But many times we're given rhymes That are quite unsingable

We're opera-mad in Camelot, We sing from the diaphragm a lo-o-o-o-t

In war we're tough and able, Quite indefatigable, Between our quests, we sequin vests And impersonate Clark Gable

It's a busy life in Camelot, I have to push the pram a lot

I HAD BUT FIFTY CENTS

I wish that you could see the gal I took to a fancy ball,
You could wrap two fingers round her waist so neat and very small.
I thought for sure two oysters pure would fill her up complete.
Such a dainty delicate little thing but this is what she eat:

A dozen raw, with a plate of slaw, and a fancy Boston roast.
An Irish stew, with crackers too, And soft-shell crabs on toast.
Then next she tried some oysters fried.
Her hunger was immense. When she yelled for more,
I hit the floor 'cause I had but fifty cents.

She said she wasn't hungry
and didn't care to eat.
But I've money in my clothes,
to me she can't be beat.
She piled it down so easy,
She had an awful tank.
Such a winsome, delicate little thing, but this is what she drank:

A brandy and gin, with rum thrown in, a schooner of lager beer,
Three whiskey skins and a couple of gins did quickly disappear.
A bottle of ale and a gin cocktail, she astonished all the gents.
I hit the floor when she called for more, 'cause I had but fifty cents.

Of course I wasn't hungry And didn't care to eat,
Expecting any moment to be kicked out in the street.
She said she'd bring her sisters along, Next time we went for fun,
Then I showed the man my fifty cents, and this is what he done:

He broke my nose, he tore my clothes, he ran me out the door,
I took the prize with two black eyes, with me wiped the floor.
He caught me where my pants are loose, and threw me over the fence.
Take my advice, don't try it twice, if you have but fifty cents.

The Wearing of The Green

by Dion Boucicault
(written 1864 for his play Arragh na Pogue, or the Wicklow Wedding)

O Paddy dear, and did you hear the news that going round?
The shamrock is forbid by law to grow on Irish ground;
St. Patrick's Day no more we'll keep, his colours can't be seen,
For there's a bloody law against the wearing of the green.
I met with Napper Tandy and he took me by the hand,
And he said, "How's poor old Ireland, and how does she stand?"
She's the most distressful counterie that ever yet was seen,
And they're hanging men and women for the wearing of the green.

Then since the colour we must wear is England's cruel red,
Sure Ireland's sons will ne'er forget the blood that they have shed.
You may take a shamrock from your hat and cast it on the sod,
It will take root and flourish there though underfoot it's trod.
When law can stop the blades of grass from growing as they grow,
And when the leaves in summer-time their verdure dare not show,
Then will I change the colour that I wear in my caubeen
But 'till that day, please God, I'll stick to wearing of the green.

But if at last our colour should be torn from Ireland's heart,
Our sons with shame and sorrow from this dear old isle will part;
I've heard a whisper of a land that lies beyond the sea
Where rich and poor stand equal in the light of freedom's day.
O Erin, must we leave you driven by a tyrant's hand?
Must we ask a mother's blessing from a strange and distant land?
Where the cruel cross of England shall nevermore be seen,
And where, please God, we'll live and die still wearing of the green!

COMMENTS
The Wearing of The Green:

Dion Boucicault was, despite his French name, an Irishman born in Dublin, a playwright. At the time, inspired by America's successful revolution against British rule, many Irish thought the time was ripe for independence. The colour green became a symbol of sympathy for Irish independence, and the British actually began executing persons found wearing anything of the colour green.

The pen, however, is mightier than the sword, and this powerful poem was the response. Napper Tandy, mentioned in the poem, was in fact a shopkeeper in Dublin who, having been identified by the British as a freedom fighter, had to flee to France. And Boucicault himself fled the country, coming to America as the words of his poem itself echo prophetic.

Boucicault did not stop writing plays, poetry and music on his arrival in New York. One of his better-known works, written over a century ago, is the well-known song, Sidewalks of New York.

His The Wearing of the Green is the music and poetry of which revolution was born.

[Volcano Gag Article]

Your Guide To… VOLCANO PREPARATION

Since the dawn of time man has been plagued by volcanoes. Volcano preparation has evolved considerably since ancient Ponpeiians attempted to fend off surges of molten lava by glaring angrily at it, then thought to be an advanced brain-wave technique for altering physical phenomena. Today there are abundant mail-order houses stocked full of volcano supplies, available to anyone serious enough to pay the inarguable fair prices required by our sponsors.

The future appears to have a whole load of lifestyle-changing events for us to arrange our schedules around. Comets, hurricanes, famines, coyotes, partly-cloudy conditions, and so on. But if we just tackle them one at a time, we can ride them out easily enough, and have a swell-old-time along the way. First, it's important to keep your psychological state up. All the physical preparation in the world won't make life worthwhile if you've neglected to do what you need to do to keep your joy going. So, next to your 10-year supply of beef jerky, you'll need some fingerpainting supplies, a recording of Burl Ives greatest hits, and a harmonica. Now to the specific matter of volcano preparation.

Avoid mountains, particularly if they are rumbling. Watch for ground that is liquid and more than 1100 degrees fahrenheit. If area residents appear to be charred or encased in stone, this may be a sign that volcanic activity is prevalent in that region. Also, look out for rapid increases in the availability of distressed real estate within the previous 24-hour period.

OK, you know what to avoid. But what if your best research sill leads you to park your trailer in a volcano-ridden land? What do you do when an eruption takes place and you're just a couple of minutes away from fossilization? First of all, don't panic. Secondly, panic. Cover your body with Vaseline. Not only will this take your mind off the situation, but it will allow the lava deposits to be chiseled off your skin more easily. Also, drink something cool.

Well, that's about it. Be sure to send me a card and let me know how it works out.

[Twenty-Three Skidoo]

After recounting the popular theories about the phrase "twenty-three skidoo", the eminent etymologist Partridge reported that one of his correspondents felt that the phrase might have had its roots in old telegraphers' code, where common phrases were replaced by numbers. In this code, "30" sent in Morse code meant "end of transmission" (a notation still used by journalists to signal the end of a story), "73" meant "best regards" (still very much in use by amateur radio operators), and "23" meant "away with you!"

This, to me, seems the most likely explanation of the phrase. The old code meaning of "twenty-three," coupled with "skiddoo," a variant of "skedaddle," perfectly conveys the meaning of what we, today, would sum up simply as "beat it!"

Rights Against Unlawful Entry: Your landlord, or an agent for your landlord, may only enter your apartment for the following reasons:

to inspect the premises; / to make repairs; / to show the apartment to a prospective tenant, purchaser, mortgagee or its agents; / in accordance with a court order; /

if the premises appear to be abandoned, or to inspect the premises within the last 30 days of tenancy in order to determine the amount of damage to be deducted from the security deposit.

The landlord should be reasonable and attempt to arrange a mutually convenient time to visit the apartment. If the landlord insists on entering your apartment in an unreasonable fashion, you may file for a temporary restraining order at your local district court. (M.G.L. c. 186 §§ 14 and 15B)

Fiat" Currency

[Roosevelt First Inaugural Address, March 4, 1933]

.... We are, I know, ready and willing to submit our lives and property to such discipline,... Our Constitution is so simple and practical that it is possible always to meet extraordinary needs by changes in emphasis and arrangement without loss of essential form....I shall ask the Congress for the one remaining instrument to meet the crisis — broad Executive power to wage a war against the emergency, as great as the power that would be given to me if we were in fact invaded by a foreign foe....
-------

[Hoover Speech during campaign against Roosevelt, October 31, 1932 ]

Another proposal of our opponents which would destroy the American system is that of inflation of the currency. The bill which passed the last session of the Democratic House called upon the Treasury of the United States to issue $2,300 million in paper currency that would be unconvertible into solid values. Call it what you will, greenbacks or fiat money . It was the same nightmare which overhung our own country for years after the Civil War.

In our special situation today the issuance of greenbacks means the immediate departure of this country from the gold standard, as there could be no provision for the redemption of such currency into gold. The new currency must obviously go to immediate and constantly fluctuating discount when associated with currency convertible in gold.

The oldest law of currency is that bad money drives out the good, for a population--that is, every individual--will hoard good currency and endeavor to get rid of the bad.

The currency of Germany was depreciating so rapidly that the industries paid their wages daily, and sometimes indeed twice a day. The wife grabbed the paper from her husband's hand and rushed to the nearest provision store to spend it quickly before the rapid depreciation had cut its purchasing power in two. '[chairman of German Trade Unions Grasseman said: ] What your committee must do for German labor is to give us a stable currency. Do you know,' 'that it has been impossible for a wage earner in Germany to fulfill even the most basic moral obligations ?

"'Knowing that a child was coming to the family there was no way the husband, through effort or sacrifice or savings, could guarantee his wife a doctor and a nurse when that event arrived. As a basic human thing, assure us a stable currency 'and thereby insure to the worker that his wages will have the same purchasing power when he wants to spend them as they had when he earned them.'"

Now, I ask, is that a policy consonant with the American system? [The Democratic proposals portend to lead us into that very same financial chaos as the German state experienced during its post war inflation]

Political Items

[Michael Peroutka (2004 Constitution Party Candidate)]

CONSTITUTIONALIST PARTY: Maryland attorney Michael Peroutka is the party's Presidential candidate for 2004 -- but not for a lack of trying to find someone else to run in his place. Peroutka repeatedly said -- even after he was designated the CP's provisional Presidential nominee in 2004 -- that he would gladly step-aside if the party found a "big name" person willing to run under the party's banner. The CP leadership offered deposed Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore (R) the nomination in November 2003 -- in the place of Peroutka -- but Moore quickly responded then that he was not interested in leaving the GOP.

By early 2004, Moore briefly appeared to reconsider (but again stayed out of the race). That cemented Peroutka's position as the CP nominee at the party's national convention in May 2004. Peroutka has a long record of social conservative activism, particularly on behalf of the pro-life and pro-gun causes. The main vehicle for this activism is through the Institute on the Constitution, a conservative non-profit organization Peroutka founded and directs. He spent 11 years working for the federal government to create health care programs, but eventually left in the lates 1980s after deciding that the programs on which he worked "had no constitutional foundation." Peroutka is also the founder and director of the American College for Cultural Studies (a biblical-constitutionalist education program), and is active in several church and civic organizations.

He opposed the US action in Iraq on constitutional grounds: "It's not that Congress doesn't have the authority to declare war. It's just that it hasn't done so." However, he emphasizes that he strongly supported the US troops in Iraq while opposing "the unconstitutional procedures under which they were committed to fight." Peroutka's strong Christian beliefs also influence his political views. He advocates the view that the Constitution is founded on the Bible and it can't be sustained without a biblically-grounded judiciary. Baptist Pastor and social conservative political activist Chuck Baldwin has already been designated as Peroutka's VP runningmate. Based on the party's history, the Peroutka-Baldwin ticket will likely obtain ballot access in at least 30 states.

"The voluntary exposure of the brain to microwaves from mobile phones by one-fourth of the world's population has been called the largest human biologic experiment ever," says Dr. Leif Salford, a neurosurgeon at Lund University in Sweden.

[PHONY RADIATION SHIELD STICK-ON PATCH]
A company claiming its product blocked mobile phone radiation has been permanently prevented from marketing the device.

...The little oval stick-on things I've seen in convenience stores, along with the "range enhancers" that stick on under the battery are total rip-off's. If you want to avoid RF cooking your brain, use a headset for long calls, or use the always-annoying speakerphone mode...take it to a metal shop and have them encase it in a block of lead...

...products that block only the earpiece — or another small portion of the phone — are totally ineffective because the entire phone emits electromagnetic waves. What's more, these shields may interfere with the phone's signal, cause it to draw even more power to communicate with the base station, and possibly emit more radiation. [FTC]

...don't bother stuffing around with B.S. radiation shields, as they affect the operation of the phone resulting in higher power being used -- in effect increasing your supposed risk and decreasing your talk-time! As to aluminum foil or other metals: do they actually reduce the field strength? Or do they induce capacitance requiring your phone to pump out even more radiation to keep the singnal alive? [Aluminum is non-ferrous and has no effect on magnetic radiation - RJ] Still, you've got to keep your family jewels safe.

... The best way to reduce your exposure to cell phone radiation and still use cell phones is to use an external antenna and a headset. Both will put distance between your head and the main source of radiation the antenna. An external antenna should increase range and the handset will reduce power transmitted...

The Wave Shield was marketed as blocking up to 97 per cent of electromagnetic radiation to the inner ear, but the claim was too good to be true as far as the Commerce Commission was concerned. It investigated the claims, and gathered expert evidence that the device would not do what the manufacturer claimed, Commission Director of Fair Trading, Deborah Battell, said in a statement. "The radiation waves would simply go around the patch and would not, in any case, only be absorbed by the inner ear." In Christchurch District Court yesterday Judge Stephen Erber sentenced Waveshield (New Zealand) Ltd on four breaches of the Fair Trading Act, the Commission said. Fines totalled $4000 plus costs.

We used to use these to lock up our bicycles, but we're switching to something else ASAP. (Oh, and just to be trite, the pen is mightier than the lock.)

  • Use a 6- or 8-in non-stick saute or omelet pan. The smaller pan prevents thinning & burned edges.
  • Use a teaspoon of fat per egg.
  • Add eggs to a PRE-HEATED pan and cook over medium-low heat.
  • To avoid browing, use low heat & cook until the white appears solid.
  • Flip over & cook another minute or two.
  • If the egg's edges start to go brown, turn down heat.

How to Peel a Hard Boiled Egg

HARD TO PEEL: Avoid this by using older eggs, about a week old or older. These are easier to peel because 1.) The egg becomes more alkaline and 2.) the air pocket at the end of the egg gets bigger as air is absorbed through the porous shell. The combination of these factors magically makes the egg shell easier to remove.

Also put them in ice w ater after you boil them.

TURKEY

  • Brush the skin with olive oil. Tie drumsticks together with string.

  • Place on a rack in a roasting pan, and into a preheated 350 degree F (If you don't have a rack, place 2 or 3 large carrots crosswise underneath the bird to ensure good heat circulation.)

  • Cover with foil — but remove foil during the last 20 minutes for browner, crispier skin.

  • Basting is not necessary, but helps promote even browning.

How to Remove Stains From Carpet

  • Detergent solution: Mix 1/4 teaspoon of a translucent liquid dishwashing detergent, such as Dawn or Joy, into one cup of lukewarm water.

  • Vinegar solution: Mix one cup of white vinegar with two cups of water.

  • Solvent solution: Use an oil solvent. Or substitute nail-polish remover, such as Cutex Quick & Gentle non-acetone polish remover.

1: Dip a white cloth/paper towelinto the solution and dab repeatedly. Press the cloth on the spot for a few seconds. Wait 15 minutes to break down the stain, then soak up the excess liquid with a dry white cloth.

2: Dip a cloth into the vinegar solution and dab repeatedly, then press the cloth on the spot for a few seconds. Wait another 15 minutes. (This is an important step, because white vinegar removes residual detergent, which will attract dirt if left in the carpet.)

3: Rinse by blotting with a cloth soaked in lukewarm water. Wait one hour or until the carpet dries completely. For bad spills, place a 1/2-inch-thick stack of white paper towels over the stain after step 2, then lay a glass baking dish on top for 15 minutes.

4. As long as you see the stain lightening, repeat these steps until it is gone.

How to Remove Body Odor From Upholstery

Google Results

  • BAKING SODA: Cover the entire piece with baking soda by sprinkling it and rubbing it in gently to get to deeper odors.

  • Allow the baking soda to sit on the piece overnight.

  • Vacuum thoroughly to remove.

  • VINEGAR: Mix a solution of one part white vinegar and one part water in a spray bottle. For severe cases, use FULL-STRENGTH (undiluted) vinegar.

  • Spray enough solution on the furniture to moisten the surface.

  • Open the windows (the vinegar smell WILL dissipate once it's dry/evaporates) and allow the piece to dry completely.

  • ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL: You can clean microfiber with alcohol (Like that you clean wounds) and it doesnt stain because it dries quickly.

  • SUNLIGHT/FRESH AIR: Leave it out in the sun. Sunlight kills the odor germs.

  • STEAMER: A steamer (either a floor steamer or garment kind) and steaming the crap out of it, especially with a bit of aromatic oil in the steam water.

Beach Volleyball Items

  • The "body paint" seen on beach volleyball players is actually "Kinesio Tape", which some claim to reduce pain and heal injuries.

Kinesio Tape was developed more than 25 years ago by Dr. Kenzo Kase, a Japanese chiropractor who trained in the US.

For years, the tape was primarily used by physical therapists. Kinesio Taping has spread like wildfire and it is now used by top athletes worldwide. The Japanese Olympic volleyball team is thought to have started the frenzy with the athletes.

German beach volleyball player Sara Goller, who has been sporting hot pink tape throughout the Games, says the color is nice, but its purpose is what matters. "It can release or put tension on a muscle, it depends on what you want," she tells Reuters.

Stove Types: "Induction", "Radiant", "Coil"

  • Coil Burners: These are the "standard" burners that have been used since electric stoves went into production. Electricity is applied to the heating coil, producing heat which radiates into the pot. Coil burners work by cycling on and off to produce an average level of heat.

  • Radiant: Involves passing electricity through heating elements below the ceramic top. These elements radiate their heat without warming the surrounding air. Then the heat is sent out in waves through the ceramic cover to the cookware. This is the traditional process for heating and cooking food that most of us are accustomed to.

  • Induction: the copper coils generate an electromagnetic field, which does not get hot. The coils "excite" the pot, causing it to heat. This is similar to microwave operation (but it uses ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION rather than the ionizing radiation of a microwave). The coils below the ceramic top transmit their energy into the pan causing it to heat. So the cookware and the food are the only things heating up.

Carpet Cleaning

Google: "deep clean a carpet"

How can I deep clean my carpet without a machine?

Create a solution of one part distilled vinegar and three parts cold water. Spray it onto your carpet fairly liberally, and allow it a few minutes of contact time. Then take a microfibre cloth, and start gently blotting. Don't scrub, otherwise you could damage your carpet.

  • a stiff-bristled scrubbing brush
A mixture of water and some detergent
    Some table salt
    Some baking soda
A few rags or cloth towels.

Apply shampoo/detergent LIGHTLY, then use the brush to scrub it in.

Press the towels into the carpet, letting them saturate with water.

Spray regular tap water onto the carpet after detergent is mopped up.

Again, press the cloth towels into the carpet. If possible, put a few heavy items on top of the cloths and let them sit for a while.
